SENATOR ROZ BAKER APPOINTED TO PRESTIGIOUS INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE'S SUBCOMMITTEE ON PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY CARE

Recently, South and West Maui State Senator Rosalyn Baker, was appointed to serve as a member of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) of the National Academies’ Subcommittee on Pediatric Emergency Care of the Committee (EMSC) on the Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System.

The Subcommittee of Pediatric Emergency Care Services will examine the unique challenges associated with the provision of emergency services to children and adolescents and evaluate the progress since the publication of the IOM’s 1993 report, Emergency Medical Services for Children. The objectives of this study are to: (1) examine the emergency care system in the U.S.; (2) explore its strengths, limitations, and future challenges; (3) describe a desired vision of the emergency care system; and (4) recommend strategies required to achieve that vision. The Subcommittee will consider the role of pediatric emergency services as an integrated component of the overall health system; system-side EMSC planning, coordination, and funding; embedded pediatric training in professional education; and health services and clinical research.

The Institute of Medicine is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1970 as a component of the National Academy of Sciences. The Institute provides a vital service by working outside the framework of government to ensure scientifically informed analysis and independent guidance. The IOM's mission is to serve as adviser to the nation to improve health. The Institute provides unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policy-makers, professionals, leaders in every sector of society, and the public at large.

Senator Baker’s appointment to the IOM’s Subcommittee on Pediatric Emergency Care  will be effective through April 30, 2006, which is the date the Subcommittee’s final report will be due. She's the only Hawaii official selected to serve on this prestigious 11-member panel.

“It is an honor to be appointed to this national IOM Subcommittee,” said Senator Baker. “I look forward to sharing the opportunities and challenges of Hawaii’s emergency medical system and the impact of our island’s rural and isolated area with my IOM Subcommittee colleagues and experts to find ways to improve both our state’s and our nation’s EMS systems.”

During this past 2003-2004 Sessions, Senator Baker served as Chair of the Health Committee. She has participated with paramedics and others in reviewing Hawaii's system and has championed additional emergency medical services, training opportunities and other system improvements throughout our State.
