HAWAII RxPLUS PROGRAM - WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU
On July 1, 2004 the Administration began implementing the Hawaii RxPlus program, initiated by the Legislature in response to the pleas of thousands of Hawaii resident without drug coverage. Hawaii RxPlus is a discounted drug program that is estimated to help 300,000 Hawaii residents obtain their needed medications more affordably. I was pleased to be a co-sponsor of this important legislation, Act 47.
As I stated in remarks before the Senate, “our residents shouldn’t have to choose between filling their life-saving prescriptions or paying the rent. They shouldn’t have to cut pills in half or take them every other day in hopes of making the medicine last. In recent years, medical science has made tremendous advances. Many medications are now available that can save lives and restore or maintain quality of life for those with severe illnesses. But, we all know that these advances mean nothing if patients cannot afford their medications. And unfortunately, as we’ve heard when we’ve been in hearings both here at the Capitol and throughout the State many of our residents are doing just that.
The Hawaii RxPlus program will help many people in our state not just senior citizens. I applaud the Administration, especially Directors Koller and Fukino, for their willingness to work with the Legislature on this important measure.”
